Application from Unmarried Male & Female Graduate in Mechanical Engineering/Naval architecture

for the post of Trainee Marine Enginer

Last date for receipt of application -  1st July 2008

Qualification
Graduate in Mechanical Engineering / Naval architecture from any Engineering college recognized by AICTE ( Ministry of human Resource and development. Candidate must be in possession of valid Engineering Degree / Provisional Certificate. Must have secured minimum 50% marks in Final year Engineering and at least 50% marks in English Language at 10th standard or 10+2 level.

Age
Age not exceeding 24 ( twenty four ) years as on 01.01.2009 (candidate must be born on or after 01.01.1985 only ). Age relaxation of five years for SC /ST candidates will be given as per Govt. Rules. Two years age relaxation will be given to women candidates.

Training programme
Training Program will be one- year duration compromising of residential pre-sea training Selected candidates will be undergo residential pre-sea training at Training institute approved by the Directorate General of Shipping .pre-sea Training courses are expected to commence from first week of January 2008.

Course fee
The cost of pre-sea training will be include tuition fees, books, lodging, boarding, uniform etc. and will be borne by the candidates. The training fees will be approximately Rs.1,85,000/- (Rupees one lakh Eighty five thousands only) and payable directly to the Training Institutes. These fees are not refundable. In addition, the candidates are required to pay Rs. 50,000 (Rupees Fifty thousands only) towards STCW Modular courses and other expenses. Before joining the ship candidates should obtained passport with ECNR and CDC ,which will take about 45 days time .

Full amount is to be paid prior to commencement of shore based training. fees once paid are not refundable under any circumstances, either in full or part.

From January 2005 onwards the Central Government, vide their Notification published in Gazette S.O.1436 (E) dated 30.12.2004 has notified guidelines for providing training by Shipping Companies opting for Tonnage Tax under CHAPTER XII-G of the Income Tax ACT 1961. As per these guidelines, each trainee officer has to pay Rs. 10,500 /- (Rupees Ten Thousands Five Hundred only) per month to Maritime Training Trust in Directorate General of shipping, towards his training onboard a ship prior joining the ship. This means, for total 6 (six) months shipboard training , each candidates has to pay a total sum of Rs. 63,000/- (rupees Sixty Three Thousands only).

Considering the financial burden on the candidates, The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd will initially pay the above amounts of Rs, 63,000 /- upfront to the Maritime Training Trust Prior commencement of shipboard training. However this amount will be recovered from the candidates every month from the wages they earn on board during their shipboard training as Fifth Engineer Officer.

Career Prospect

On successful completion of one year training and after obtaining Ministry of Transport (MOT) Class IV Part ‘A’ Certificates of competency from the Directorate General of Shipping, Candidates will be posted as Fifth Engineer Officers on any of the vessel owned / managed by SCI.
Gross salary payable to Fifth Engineer Officer would be as per INSA / MUI Agreement and at present is approximately Rs. 45,000/- per month.

With further experience at sea and obtaining higher Certificates of Competency, the incumbent will have the opportunity to rise to the rank of Chief Engineer Officer.

Entrance Test/Interview

Eligible candidates will be required to appear for written test in Technical Knowledge, English Language, Quantitative Aptitude test and Reasoning Ability. Question paper will be bilingual i.e. in English and Hindi.

  1. written test will be held on 3rd August 2008 at Kolkata/ Chennai /Mumbai / Delhi centers. Exact date will be intimated by post.
  2. Candidates successful in written test, will be called for interview ,medical test and final selection at Mumbai.
  3. Bonafide SC / ST Candidates called for written test and interview will be entitled for Second Class train fare from their place of residence to the nearest place of written test / interview center, as per Govt. of India Rules. However ,Original and attested photocopies of caste certificate and Documentary evidence of travel must be produced to claim Journey fare.
  4. SCI will not provide any lodging or boarding to the Candidates attending written test and interview.

Medical Standards

Candidates being posted on SCI ships should be healthy and physically fit for sea service as per STCW 95/MS Medical rules2000 as determined by SCI’s Chief Medical Officer and applicable to seafarers.

  1. Eyesight: Unaided vision of 6/12 in both eyes or 6/9 in good eye and 6/18 in the other eye.
  2. Candidates having defective color vision (color blindness) will be rejected.
  3. Candidates should pass Mercantile Marine Personality Evaluation Test (MMPE) to be conducted at D.G. Shipping nominated centers i.e. M.T.I.& LBS CAMSAR Mumbai, MERI Kolkata, NIPM Chennai, MMD Kochi and MMD Noida.

Service agreement
Selected Candidates will have to serve SCI for a minimum periods of four years after they obtained MOT Class IV Part ‘A’ Certificates of Competency. SCI may reimburse Rs. 25,000/- as Service Bonus to candidate after serving SCI for the minimum period.
How to apply

  1. Applicants, who meet the eligibility criteria, must apply in English only.
  2. The Application should be submitted in the format given alongside only, with one recent passport size photograph pasted neatly in the right hand top corner.
  3. A Demands draft of Rs. 1000/- for General / OBC Category and Rs. 500/- for SC / ST Category drawn on a Mumbai branch of any Nationalized Bank, crossed ‘A/c payee only’ and payable to “The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd” must be enclosed with the application form. Any application without the Demand Draft or of lesser amount will not be considered. Applicant must write his name in CAPITALS on the reverse of the Demand Draft. Duly completed Application Form along with Demand Draft should be sent in sealed envelope super scribed as “Application for Trainee Marine Engineer for ____________ center” to The Senior Vice President (fleet personal), The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd, “Shipping House”, 245, Madam Cama Road, Mumbai-400021 to reach not later than 1stJuly,2008. (Write choice of test center in the blank space before the word center).

General Instructions

  1. The Applicant should ensure that he fulfils the eligibility criteria, regarding educational qualification, age and eyesight. Particulars furnished in the Application Form should be correct in all respect.
  2. If any false / incorrect information furnished by the Applicant is detected at any stage, his candidature will not be considered and if selected, he will be removed from the training course and training fees will be forfeited.
  3. Course fees, once paid, will not be refunded, partly or otherwise, under any circumstances.
  4.  As the Applications are processed by a computerized system, it is essential that the application be forwarded strictly in accordance with the prescribed format.
  5. Duly filled in Application Form should have one photograph pasted and Demand Draft attached. Original / photocopies of certificates etc. should not be sent with the application form.
  6. Candidates should posses at least EIGHT (8) recent passport size photograph (front view) and THESE PHOTOGRAPH ONLY must be used on Application Form, Admit Card, Interview, Medical Examination, Pre-Sea training etc. Any change of photograph will disqualify the candidate.
  7. Candidates, who have appeared for final year Degree Examination, and awaiting results, can also apply but have to produce provisional pass certificates issued by the university before 31st August 2008.
  8. Candidates at the time of interview, will be required to produced AICTE approval letter from the college Principal, indicating approval letter number issued by AICTE that the college is approved for the Mechanical Engineering /Naval architecture Course and the period of approval of the college for the course. The letter from the Principle also indicate that clearly that validity of the AICTE approval covers the entire duration of the course that the Candidate attended. Failure to produce AICTE approval letter from the college Principal, at the time of interview, will lead to cancellation of his candidature.
  9. Sponsoring of selected Candidates to various Training Institutes will be at the sole discretion of SCI.
  10. All communication will be sent at the address given in the application. Request for change in address will not be entertained.
  11. SCI takes no responsibility for any delay / loss of any application or communication in postal transit.
  12. SCI reserve the right to accept or reject any application without assigning any reasons and no communication in this regard will be entertained.

SCI reserves the right to postpone / cancel the selection process for recruitment of TMEs at any stage without any reasons and no communication in this regard will be entertained
