Ph D Scholarships in Mobile Information Sharing at Nanyang Technological University

The minimum entry qualifications for admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are a Master’s degree and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study.

Applications are invited for PhD scholarships in mobile information sharing research at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication & Information at Nanyang Technological University (Singapore). Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work on a cutting-edge mobile interactive digital media project that involves gameplay and information sharing. Potential areas of research include:

*Mobile game design and development for information sharing
*User interface design and evaluation
*Modeling mobile information seeking
*Mobile data management
*Information retrieval and mining techniques
*Mobility and management of information systems
*Social, psychological and organizational impact studies

Ideal candidates would have a good Master`s degree in computer science, information systems, information science, or fields relevant to the above research areas. They should have good communication skills in English and be motivated to carry out research in one or more of the above areas. They should also preferably have some mobile applications development and/or data analysis experience. GRE scores are also required for candidates whose degrees are not awarded from a Singapore-based university.

Scholarships are available for the August 2009 semester. Successful candidates will be awarded a four-year scholarship plus a monthly stipend.

Higher Degree By Research or By Coursework
The school currently offers two types of graduate degrees - by research or by coursework. Students can study for either a PhD or Master’s degree by research or for a master’s degree by coursework. Those pursuing a degree by research are known as research students in the School. Although they are also required to take a certain number of courses, their training is mainly achieved through completing an independent research project for their dissertation or thesis. Students by coursework spend more time in the classroom. Their training is mainly through coursework plus a dissertation or professional project. Research students are usually provided with full financial support in the form of teaching assistantship scheme or research scholarship scheme. For students by coursework, financial aid is very limited and normally not awarded to new students.

Admission Requirements
Master’s Degree
The minimum entry qualifications for admission as a Master’s candidate by research are a Bachelor’s degree with honours at least at second-class (Upper) level or equivalent and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study. The programme is designed for students with a strong undergraduate background who seek to develop skills for research in communication or information studies. Applicants must demonstrate competency in English and the ability to do independent research. The degree allows a maximum of three years of full-time work or four years of part-time work on an original research project leading towards the thesis.

Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
The minimum entry qualifications for admission as a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy are a Master’s degree and the ability to pursue research in the candidate’s proposed field of advanced study. As the highest academic credential in our discipline, the PhD degree is well suited for advanced students who wish to become teachers and researchers in communication or information studies. Admission into the PhD programme requires a master’s degree in a related discipline, English-language competency, and the ability to do independent research. Candidates usually complete the PhD programme in four to five years. The PhD is earned through original research leading to the dissertation.

GRE Requirement
All applicants who have graduated from an overseas university are required to take GRE and submit their GRE scores for verbal, quantitative and analytical writing together with their application. More information on taking GRE can be found at http://www.gre.org/

The Candidature
At present, the University admits all students as one of the following:
•PhD Students are expected to be confirmed as Ph.D. candidates before end of 2nd year of candidature
•Masters Research Students are expected to be confirmed as a Masters candidates by end of 1st year of candidature

Candidates who have obtained a Bachelor’s degree only can be offered admission as (2) or (3) above.

For full time students, it usually takes two years to complete a Master’s degree and four years to complete a PhD degree.

Coursework Requirement and Assessment of Performance
In addition to the research project a student works on for his or her dissertation or thesis under a supervisor, he or she is required to attend classes and pass the examinations in at least 6 subjects (for PhD students) or 3 subjects (for Master’s students), and obtain an overall average grade of B at the end of first two semesters (for full-time students) and first four semesters (for part-time students). The award of degree will be based on submission of thesis deemed satisfactory by the examiners and fulfillment of the coursework requirements. The courses taken may be those offered by the School or approved subjects from other schools. Selection of subjects is made after consultation with the supervisor.

Candidates must sit for a qualifying examination before the confirmation of candidature. The University is also working on a Grades Points Average System set for research students.

Research students work closely and keep in regular contact with their assigned supervisor on their research project. Supervisors will submit regular reports on the progress of each student under their supervision. In addition, research students who are offered research scholarships are required to provide teaching and non-teaching assistance work to the School in the form of teaching, laboratory assistance, administrative and/or other duties of up to 10 hours per week.

Research Topic and Proposal
In your application for graduate studies by research, you must include a research proposal. You are free to propose any topic in the fields of communication and/or information studies. However, because the programme requires that the student work closely with the supervisor, you should ensure that your field of research tallies with the interests of your potential supervisor. You may visit our school’s website to find out about the staff research publication/interest. You are encouraged to approach individual staff members to discuss your research topic and possible supervision.

The length of the proposal can be anywhere between three and 15 pages. It usually contains the following:
•Statement of research question
•Significance of research question
•Literature review
•Methods
•And references list

Sample of Works
Although it is not required, applicants are encouraged to send in their sample of works, including published or unpublished research, various types of writing, multi-media products, or any other products that could help us assess a candidate.

Academic Year
The University’s academic year commences in the second week of August and is divided into two semesters. The first semester begins in August and the second semester begins in January. Fees
Research fees for graduate students by research from academic year 2008 range from S$4,480 to S$4,930 for Singaporean/PR students and S$4,790 for international students per academic year. The fees are reviewed and subject to revision yearly. As and when fees are revised, the new fees will apply to all existing and new students. Other fees include registration fee, student registration card fee, examination fee and computer account fee.

Financial Assistance
The School provides financial assistance to full-time research students in the form of research scholarship scheme.

Research scholars are required to perform teaching, research and other administrative duties of up to 10 hours per week.

The award is tenable for one year in the first instance. It can be renewed for another year (for Master’s degree candidate) or another three years (for Ph.D candidate). The renewal of scholarship is at the discretion of the School, subject to student’s progress and performance as well as availability of funding.

The scholarship covers research fees and includes a monthly stipend ranging from S$1,500 to S$2,500.

Other forms of research scholarships are provided by the University to candidates with outstanding academic results to pursue higher degree studies by research on a full-time basis.

Application Procedures
There are two intakes a year, in January and August. Applications for higher degree by research may be submitted at anytime but applicants are advised to submit them at least 4 months before the desired intake date.

To be considered for admission in August (Semester 1) and January (Semester 2), applications must be submitted to Graduate Studies Office by 31 January for Semester 1, and 31 July for Semester 2 respectively. The University reserves the right to consider applications for other semesters as determined by the University.

You will receive an application number after submitting your application online.

After the online submission, the applicant needs to submit the application printouts with supporting documents (eg official transcripts, etc) to the University. After these hardcopies are received by the Graduate Studies Office, the applicant will receive an email acknowledgement of the receipt of his or her application materials. The application will then be forwarded to the school for evaluation/recommendation. Kindly read the instructions for online application carefully.

Should you be successful in your application and accept the University’s offer of admission, the University will apply for the Student’s Pass for you (applicable only to full-time students from overseas).

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) takes at least 6 weeks to issue the provisional Student’s Pass Approval Letter. Please note that mails from Singapore to overseas countries take at least 2 weeks to arrive.

The estimated monthly expenses of an international student are as follows:
