Birla Institute of Technology Mesra,(popularly known as BIT, Mesra or BIT, Ranchi) is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented Deemed University under Sec. 3 of the UGC act 1956. BIT functions under the overall supervision, direction and control of a Boad of Governors, comprising representatives of the Ministry of Human Resource ,Development, Government of India UGC, the State Government, the Chancellor the A.IC.T.E the Hindustan Charity Trust and the Institute Faculty.

LOCATION

The main campus of the Institute at Mesra is located 16 kilometers from Ranchi in a picturesque 780-acre (3.2 km2) setting at the confluence of the rivers Jhumar and Suvarnarekha.

ELIGIBILITY

Common Minimum Eligibility Criteria for all Undergraduate Programmes

a) The maximum age limit for admission to undergraduate programmes is 21 years (26 years for SC/ST candidates) as on 1st Oct 2009.

b) Candidates for the various programmes must have studied and passed certain required subjects / combinations of subjects in Class 12 as given below against each programme. Candidates must have passed in ALL subjects in which they have appeared in Class 12 (excluding optional subjects) with certain minimum marks in average for each programme as given below. Marks in Class 12 will be computed as average of best 5 subjects including English and other required subjects / combinations of subjects for a given programme. The minimum cut-off for a given programme may vary from Centre to Centre where such programme is offered.
Eligibility criteria for the M.E., M. Pharm, M. Tech, Master of Urban Planning and M.Sc. programmes

A) Minimum Eligibility Criteria for the M.E. programmes (MEC – PG1):

a) Candidates must hold a B.E. / B.Tech / AMIE or equivalent degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses. Candidates must have a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation. [Sponsored candidates must have minimum 55% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in graduation]. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply – see Selection Procedures below

b) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

c) Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2009 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the interviews they must bring:

i.           A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that by 30 June 2009, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

ii.           A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that they have obtained 60% marks or equivalent (45% in case of SC/ST candidates) based on latest available grades / marks.

B) Minimum Eligibility Criteria for the M. Pharm programme (MEC – PG2):

a) Candidates must hold a B. Pharm degree from a PCI and AICTE approved Institute. Candidates must have a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation. [Sponsored candidates must have minimum 55% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in graduation]. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects). Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply – see Selection Procedures below

b) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

c) Candidates appearing for final examinations of their Bachelor’s programme in 2009 can also apply, and if selected can join the programme provisionally. At the time of the interviews they must bring:

i. A certificate in original from the Principal of their Institute certifying that by 30 June 2009, they will have appeared for examination in all subjects required for obtaining their Bachelor’s degree.

a) Candidates must hold EITHER a

i.           B.E. / B.Tech / AMIE / MCA / equivalent degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses, with a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation / MCA. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation / MCA will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects), OR an

ii.           M.Sc. / M.A. degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below for the respective courses with 55% (45% for SC/ST), after graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification in 10+2+3 system from a recognized University

Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply – see Selection Procedures below

Sponsored candidates must have minimum 55% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in B.E. / B.Tech or equivalent / MCA, or 50% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in M.Sc. / M.A. degree in the appropriate disciplines / branches mentioned below

b) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

D) Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Master in Urban Planning (Town Planning) – MUP programme (MEC – PG4):

a) Candidates must hold EITHER a

i.           B.Arch / B.Planning or equivalent or B.E. in Civil Engineering with a first class or minimum 60% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation. In case the examining Board does not award a class, the percentage marks in graduation will be computed as average of marks obtained in all subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects), OR an

ii.           M.A. / M.Sc. degree in Geography, Economics, Sociology, Environmental Science, Statistics or Anthropology with 55% marks (45% for SC/ST) after graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification in 10+2+3 system from a recognized University

Candidates should preferably be GATE qualified. Non-GATE candidates may also apply – see Selection Procedures below

Sponsored candidates must have minimum 55% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in B.Arch / B.Planning or equivalent or B.E. in Civil Engineering, or 50% in average (45% for SC/ ST) in M.A. / M.Sc. degree in Geography, Economics, Sociology, Environmental Science, Statistics or Anthropology

b) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

E) Minimum Eligibility Criteria for the M.Sc. programmes offered at Mesra, Jaipur, Kolkata and Lalpur (MEC – PG5):

a) Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India/AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education (10+2+3 system) after completing higher secondary schooling (Class 12 or equivalent).

b) Candidates of B.Sc. / B.A. Honours must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in their Honours subject. Candidates of other graduate courses must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

c) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

Eligibility Criteria for the full-time MCA Programme

1) Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India/AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education (10+2+3 system) after completing higher secondary schooling (Class 12 or equivalent).

2) Candidates must have one of following qualifications:

a) BCA, or

b) B.Sc. in Computer Science / Information Technology / Electronics, or

c) B.Sc. / B.A. with Mathematics or Statistics at graduate level

3) Candidates of B.Sc. / B.A. Honours must have minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks in average in their Honours subject. Candidates of BCA and other graduate courses must have minimum 60% (45% for SC/ST) marks in average in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

4) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

Eligibility Criteria for the full-time MBA programme

1) Candidates must have appeared in CAT

2) In addition, candidates should have secured Verbal Percentile Scores and Total Percentile Scores which conform to the requirements prescribed in our relevant announcements, that is, they should have secured Verbal Percentile Scores and Total Percentile Scores which are at least equal to the cut-offs given in our notifications

3) Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent qualification of any of the Universities incorporated by an act of the central or state legislatures in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of UGC Act, 1956, or possess an equivalent qualification recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India/AIU. This degree must entail a minimum of three years of education (10+2+3 system) after completing higher secondary schooling (Class 12 or equivalent).

4) Candidates of B.Sc. / B.A. / B. Com. Honours must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in their Honours subject. Candidates of BBA and other graduate courses must have minimum 55% marks in average (45% for SC/ST) in graduation, marks to be computed as average of marks obtained in ALL subjects in which candidate has appeared (excluding optional subjects).

5) Candidates with qualifications acquired through correspondence or distance-learning programmes are eligible only if they acquired such qualifications as working professionals / while in employment.

HOSTEL

There are student hostels in BIT. Eleven hostels for boys and two separate hostels for girls. It is one of the only premier institute of the country to provide single rooms to students starting from the very first year with internet facilities to all free of cost. Students in hostel enjoy facilities like table tennis, carom in the common room and a television set for entertainment in the tv room. There is also a separate reading room where students have access to all important national and local newspapers and magazines. There is a mess in each hostel which runs on a no profit – no loss basis. Students are given the freedom to make the menu of their choice. Solar heaters are installed in hostels to provide warm water to students during winter.
