GATE - 2009 (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering)

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board-GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

Admission to Postgraduate Degree Programmes in Management at IISc Bangalore, IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee for the academic year 2008 - 2009 will be open only to those who qualify in JMET - 2008.

About GATE Examination
Candidates will be required to appear in a single paper of three hours duration. The examination will be held from 09:30 hours to 12:30 hours on Sunday, February 08, 2009. The list of papers for GATE 2009 is given under Structure of GATE. The question papers will be in English only.

Before applying for GATE 2009, candidates must assure themselves that they have chosen the right paper, which qualifies them to become eligible to seek admission to the specific programme they are interested in. The criteria for postgraduate admission with Scholarship/ Assistantship are different in various Institutes/Universities. GATE Offices will not provide any information in this regard. For more details, the candidates are required to contact the Institutes/Universities to which they are interested in seeking admission.

The choice of the paper is the responsibility of the candidate.

CAT-2008 will be conducted on November 16 and results will be declared on January 9, 2009

Scores of the Common Entrance Test (CAT) conducted by Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) will now be available through SMS and email.

“Getting CAT scores through SMS and email is an option introduced by us to decrease the pressure on our website where the results are available online”, Head of the IIM-Ahmedabad examination committee Satish Deodhar said on Thursday.

“When the CAT results are announced, lakhs of candidates log on to the IIM website to know the results. This puts a lot of load on the website,” Deodhar said.

“So, we have decided to introduce the service that would allow the candidates to know their scores by sending an SMS or putting up a request through email. We have mentioned these options in this year’s CAT information bulletin itself,” he said.

“We will be sending the scores through post, which will be considered the most authentic document,”

Deodhar said.
Last year over two lakh students had appeared for CAT examinations.

Deodhar said they had tried out the SMS service last year and had received good response and that’s why it has been officially introduced from this year.

COURSE STRUCTURE FOR MBA WITH SPECIALISATION IN INFORMATION MANAGEMENT (IM)

Eligibility

The minimum qualification required for the admission are the following :
a. Bachelor’s degree in any discipline. Only candidates who have completed the three-year degree course will be considered for admissions. Candidates appearing for the final part of their degree examination may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, can take provisional admission provided their examinations are completed by 1st July, 2002. In case they are declared failed in their examination, their admission will stand cancelled automatically. No fees are refundable on this ground.
b. Applicants should have an adequate knowledge of English and Hindi. In case a student is not acquainted with Hindi, he or she should be willing to pick up a working knowledge of it during the first few months for effective participation in field work.
c. Candidates sponsored by organisation, Industries or State Governments, are welcome to apply, but they have to pass through the same procedures as other candidates and pay the same fees.
Seats Available : 60 percent of the total seats will be reserved for the State of Jharkhand including 33% for SC/ST and 7% for Christians.

Accommodation/Hostel Facilities : A limited number of hostel seats are available at Loyola Hostel (for R.C. Students) and at YMCA Hostel. Other students have to make their own arrangements in lodges and hostels in town. 100 bed Hostel by Ministry of Welfare, Govt. of Jharkhand for tribal girls will be ready by August, 2002.

Computing  : The Institute has a state of the art computer lab and resource centre. Recognising the challenges that the industry has put forth in terms of information technology, the institution’s computer lab hosts a range of latest softwares, LAN facility with over 40 terminals and then necessary hardware support in synchronization with the needs.

Library : The Institute has a well stocked library containing over 32,000 volumes of books, journals, encyclopedias, almanacs and magazines. It subscribes to more than 100 periodicals and journals.
